How to prepare for your first design studio interview

A design interview is mostly a conversation about your work. Preparation makes the difference between nervous and confident. This guide covers what to prepare and what to expect.

Before the interview

  • Study the studio’s work and pick two projects you can talk about
  • Prepare a 10-minute walk-through of your three best projects
  • Have your portfolio ready on a laptop or tablet, plus a PDF copy
  • Know your software skills honestly, and what you are learning next

Presenting your work

For each project, explain the problem, your idea, one key decision and what you would do differently. Keep it short and let them ask questions. Show a drawing or production detail, not only the final image.

Questions you are likely to hear

  • Walk us through a project you are proud of
  • What was your role in this group project?
  • How do you handle feedback or a client who disagrees?
  • Which software do you use, and how fast are you?
  • Why do you want to work with us?

After the interview

Send a short thank-you email the same day. If they give you a test task, ask for the brief and deadline in writing and deliver on time. Being reliable is the first thing a studio checks.

Rules, fees and practices change. Always check the current official source for your city and project.
