How architects use AI tools: a practical guide

AI tools are now part of everyday studio work. They do not replace the architect, but they change how fast ideas can be explored and presented. This guide covers where they help, where they fall short and the rules to follow.

Where AI helps today

  • Early ideas: generating many quick concept images or massing options from a short description
  • Sketch to image: turning a hand sketch or simple model into a realistic visual for discussion
  • Mood boards: collecting materials, light and atmosphere for a client conversation
  • Writing: drafting design statements, emails, reports and presentation text
  • Research: summarising long documents, with every fact checked against the source

Where it falls short

AI images look convincing but often ignore structure, regulations, scale and how things are built. They cannot replace drawings, calculations or a site visit. Treat every AI output as a starting point that you check and develop.

A simple workflow

  • Start with your own sketch or idea
  • Use AI to explore variations quickly
  • Choose one direction and develop it properly in your usual software
  • Use AI again to help present the final idea clearly

Use it responsibly

  • Never upload confidential client drawings or data to public AI tools
  • Say when work is AI-assisted, in college and in practice
  • Check copyright and usage terms before using images commercially
  • Check every fact an AI tool gives you

Rules, fees and practices change. Always check the current official source for your city and project.
